Roof Coating Saves on Energy Cost
The rusty metal roof on CPS Industries' Quonset Building in Dunkirk, NY, was costing the company money. Due to the building's lack of insulation, the company found itself wasting energy and paying excessive heating bills.

Realizing the need to cut costs and its responsibility to conserve energy, CPS Industries sought to protect and improve the insulation efficiency of its 30,000square-foot metal roof.

One way to improve insulation is through the use of polyurethane foam roofing systems. When compared to conventional roofing systems, polyurethane foam is 100 percent bonded, lightweight and achieves energy savings of up to 30 percent.

Historically, polyurethane foam systems have relied on chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in their process. These blowing agents have been recognized as harmful to the ozone layer. To solve its insulation needs without harm to the environment, CPS Industries selected Elasto-Bond 820 silicone coating manufactured by Futura Coatings Inc. of Hazelwood, MO, and non-CFC foam, FE-314-3.0, manufactured by Foam Enterprises, Minneapolis.

Futura's coating systems provide seamless insulation and long-term protection against cyclic weathering and ultraviolet radiation. In addition, its products have UL 790 Class A approvals and meet all building codes.

Contractor Robert Henderson of Henderson Johnson, Syracuse, NY, said, "First the crew cleaned and primed the existing roof surface." He commented that the primer that was put on first was of more importance on this job because it was a rusted roof.

He continued, explaining that "They spray-applied the non-CFC urethane foam material at two inches. Then the coating was applied to 25 mil thickness."

Henderson said the owner of the building was looking for a system that would both solve their rusty leaking roof situation and provide additional insulation for energy conservation. "This is (on that type of structure) a very good economical solution to the problem because you have a corrugated metal roofing structure that is difficult to attach insulation to. You can spray apply insulation to it following the contours of the metal roof."

Henderson's crew completed the project in approximately one week.
